Shah Receives Provost Preeminence Award and Pride of Gujarat Award

Emeritus Professor of Chemical Engineering and Anesthesiology, Dr. Dinesh O. Shah, was awarded the Provost Preeminence Award and the Pride of Gujarat Award in March 2018.

I wish to convey my sincere appreciation for the Pride of Gujarat Award. My surprise was compounded by also receiving the medallion for the Provost Preeminence Award,” says Dr. Shah.

The awards were presented in recognition of Dr. Shah’s distinguished academic accomplishments and his support of the Gujarati Poetry Festival and Gujarat studies.

Dr. Shah earned a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics, and an M.S. in Biophysics at Mumbai University. He attended Columbia University, NY, where he earned a Ph.D. in Biophysics. In 1970, he joined UF as a faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology and the Department of Chemical Engineering.

During his career, he served as a chairman of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1987–1991, and Director of the Center for Surface Science and Engineering from 1984–2007. He received numerous awards including the “Florida Scientist of the Year” Award, a Teaching Excellence Award, a Distinguished Service Award, a “Pride of India” Award, and a Teacher-Scholar Award from UF.

After retiring from UF in 2007, Dr. Shah has spent half his time in India as a voluntary professor to establish a Center of Excellence for Surface Science and Nanotechnology at Dharmsinh Desai University in Nadiad, Gujarat. He established this Center with the assistance of the University, the Gujarat government, and 10 major companies. This is his way to show gratitude to India for his education.

Dr. Shah has made an enduring mark on UF with his generous donations for the Dinesh Shah Distinguished Faculty Fellowship, and by establishing the D.O. Shah Annual Lecture in Surface Science. He further supported his love of Gujarati Poetry and Culture by donating a matching gift to the Gujarat Region Study Program.
