Brief Description of Current Research
It has been shown that kraft black liquors produced
in kraft pulping behave as complex polymer solutions. Fundamental understanding
of the rheological and thermodynamic behavior of these fluids is important if
pulping processes are to be improved with major savings in energy and major
reductions in emissions. A major program is in progress to develop correlations
relating properties of these fluids to composition.
Most polymer research requires characterization of
the polymer, particularly molecular weight and molecular weight distribution.
Research to develop methods to characterize polymers, particularly heterogeneous
polymers from natural sources such as wood extracts, polysaccharides, and
proteins, is in progress.
Research has been conducted on processes for use of
polymers such as lignin and recycled materials. This includes use of lignin for
carbon fibers and rubber reinforcement and reuse of thermoplastic packaging
material.
These studies have been supported by the U.S.
Department of Energy and a number of industrial firms.
