The AIChE Student Chapter
The student AIChE chapter has always been a source of fun, instruction, and
service for our students. The chapter has won the Outstanding Chapter Award (by
ASEE) for nine out of the last eleven years. During the 1998 school year, the
chapter took part part in over 20 events—plant trips, speakers, community
services, conferences, homecoming, and the Engineers Fair.
AIChE triumphed at the Engineers Fair in 1999, winning the first-place trophy
for visual presentation and the first-place trophy for oral presentation. Over
forty student volunteers constructed and staffed a display booth that included a
number of educational, hands-on experiments that were designed to introduce to
children of all ages some of the principles used by chemical engineers.
In 1995, the UF chapter hosted the National Conference held in Miami. The
officers worked extremely hard throughout the summer and fall to ensure a
successful meeting, and as a result of their efforts, the conference provided a
great time for the 1,200 student members who attended.
In the Spring of 1996, the chapter sponsored two community services: judging the
Alachua County Science Fair, and an Easter egg hunt for pre-school children from
the J.J. Finley School. The Spring 1996 regional conference was held at Tulane
at New Orleans and the Chapter was able to coax some 28 members to abandon their
studies for two days for a trip to the New Orleans conference and the
attractions on Bourbon Street. Also, the 1996 banquet was the biggest event
ever, with 140 people in attendance, including Dean Winfred Phillips and
Advisory Board Member, Dr. Charles Stokes, who donated the Charles A. Stokes
Professorship.
In 1997, the UF chapter hosted the Southern Regionals in Orlando. Over 500
students from southeastern universities participated, and the event was a
resounding success.
