CHE Department History - Department Chairs
Dr. Arthur L. Fricke - (1985-1987)
Art
Fricke has had a distinguished research and teaching career. He earned his B.S.
at Cincinnati, where he won both the Tour Award and the OSPE Award as the
outstanding CHE graduate. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. at Wisconsin, after
which he spent five years working for various chemical companies. In 1967 he
entered the academic arena teaching at VPI, and then in 1976 became Chairman of
the CHE Department at the University of Maine-Orono. From 1980-1985 he headed up
many research projects in the field of pulp and paper as the Gottesman Research
Professor at Maine-Orono. In 1985, he was selected as Chairman at UF, where he
continued his full research program in conjunction with his administrative
duties. He was awarded so many research grants and contracts from government and
industry that he had to give up his administrative duties to meet these new
obligations. He has continued teaching a process design and economics courses
while pursuing his research.
Dr. Fricke has been the recipient of many awards. In both 1974 and 1976 he
received the AIChE Award as the outstanding professor of chemical engineering at
VPI. In 1981 he got the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the College of
Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. In 1987 his high school in
Huntington, W.VA., recognized him by electing him to their Hall of Fame. At UF
he received the AIChE Outstanding Teacher in Chemical Engineering Award in 1990,
1991, and 1993, and the Research Achievement Award in 1990, 1991, and 1992. It
might be added that Art is an excellent golfer, but he seldom has time to get on
the links and practice his swing.
