Maryly VanLeer Peck
Maryly
was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in the southeastern U.S.A. in cities
where engineering colleges are located. She comes from a family of engineers,
and she herself has three degrees in chemical engineering. Her Bachelor's degree
was awarded in 1951 magna cum laude by Vanderbilt University. Her Masters of
Science in 1955 is the first engineering degree awarded by the University of
Florida to a woman. Maryly has over 45 years of experience in industry, federal
government, and all levels of education. Her chemical engineering concentration
is mass transfer, and she has worked on solid fuels in the space industry.
Mathematics has been her primary teaching field. She has fifteen years of
college and university administration, including two college presidencies. She
was the first woman to be named president of one of Florida's 26 community
colleges, and since 1997 she has been President Emeritus of Polk Community
College.
Maryly is active in the Rotary Club of Winter Haven. She has maintained perfect
attendance since she joined Rotary in 1989, as the first woman member of her
Rotary Club. She is the daughter and sister of Rotarians and has been married to
three Rotarians. She led a Rotary Group Study Exchange to Iwate, Japan in April
2002. She is past Secretary and current President Elect. She has served as
Chairman of the Scholarship Committee and the Speech Contest for many years and
as the District 6890 Chairman of Vocational Service.
Maryly continues her interest and involvement with young people. She serves on
the boards of various schools and other organizations that assist young people
and provide scholarships for worthy students. She is currently Chairman of the
Theatre Winter Haven Board. She was awarded the "She knows Where She's Going"
award by Girl's Inc. and the 2002 Community Service Award by the Junior League
of Winter Haven. She has been honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of the
University of Florida.
Maryly is married to Dr. Edwin L. Carey. She is the mother of three sons, all
engineers, and one daughter, an Art Therapist. She also has three step
daughters, five grandchildren and two "acquired" grandchildren.
