Thin Film Evaporator

The thin film evaporator (TFE) is a unit operation used primarily to concentrate a solute. There are many industrial applications which use this theory - for example, when orange juice concentrate is made, an evaporation technique is used to remove the excess water.

Purpose

The goal of this laboratory exercise is to study film evaporation and heat exchange in a close clearance agitator evaporator.

Learning Objectives

The main learning objective of this laboratory exercise is to gain experience in characterizing the behavior of a thin film evaporator. To do this, one must examine such parameters as the overhead and bottoms products at various feed rates and compositions, cooling water rates, and steam pressures . These parameters should be calculated theoretically using available computer programs and determined experimentally from the thin film evaporator apparatus.
